Bayer Leverkusen – The Record Holders For the Biggest Winning Streak in German Football

Bayer Leverkusen vs. Hoffenheim

Bayer Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso are having the season of their dreams. The team from Bayer became the record holder for the most unbeaten consecutive matches in German football history.

On February 23rd, 2024, Bayer Leverkusen made history when they won 2 – 1 against Mainz and became unbeaten for 33 games in a row across all competitions.

The game against Mainz was quite intense. Granit Xhaka scored a sensational opening goal only three minutes after the referee blew the whistle. However, only four minutes after Bayer’s goal, Mainz equalized after a header from Dominik Kohr. The winning goal was scored by Leverkusen’s midfielder, Robert Andrich, in the 68th minute of the game.

With that victory, Bayer Leverkusen surpassed the previous record holders, Bayern Munich. Hansi Flick and the team from Munich were unbeaten for 32 games from 2019 to 2020.

Currently, Bayer Leverkusen is 8 points ahead of Bayern Munich on the Bundesliga table, having only four draws in 23 games in the German top-tier football league. What’s also interesting about Leverkusen is that they are currently the only team in the top five football leagues in Europe who have yet to suffer a defeat.

Leverkusen has the opportunity to extend their unbeaten record on March 3rd when they face Köln, a team on the verge of relegation. Bayer will also play in the semi-finals of their domestic cup—DFB Pokal. Moreover, they will play in the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League competition. In theory, they could win the treble this season.

Bayer Leverkusen has only won three major trophies since the club was founded: the DFB Pokal, the UEFA Cup, and the German Bundesliga 2 title.
